Free fall/winter vegetable seeds

The Lehigh Acres VegHeads 4-H Club recently packaged up 40,000 seed packets for one of its community service projects.

Members and their families made up vegetable seed "kits" and are offering them for free.

To receive a kit, stop by the Veterans Park Recreation Center at 55 S. Homestead Road, and ask.

Late in the season, the club recommends calling first to check that there are still kits available.

The seeds were donated by Rural King, of Bonita Springs.

Kiwanis lists speakers

The Lehigh Acres Kiwanis Club meets each week at 7:30 a.m. in the Community Room at Hope Hospice, at 1201 Wings Way.

Future speakers include:

- Today, Sept. 7: Sheryl Verhulst, mentor coordinator with the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools

- Sept. 14: Michael Kiel, donor relations officer with the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches

- Sept. 21: Stacey Gridley, teacher/sponsor for East Lee County High School's "Odyssey of the Mind" program

- Oct. 5: Sharon Hill, leadership coach/trainer with Rheama Consulting International

Girl Scouts to host information nights

Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida is inviting girls to register for the new membership year.

It will hold an information event today, Sept. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Tortuga Preserve Elementary, at 1711 N. Gunnery Road.

It will provide parents and girls with the opportunity to learn about all the exciting things Girl Scouts has to offer.

Membership and program scholarships are available based on financial need.

American Business Women Day recognition

The Lehigh Chapter of American Business Women will meet to recognize the American Business Women Day.

The meeting will be held on Sept. 10 at 11:30 a.m. at Connors Steak and Seafood, at 10076 Gulf Center Drive, Fort Myers.

The cost is $30.

Local first responders invited to breakfast

The American Legion Post 323 invites first responders and their families to a free breakfast on Sept. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon at 1124 Ashlar Ave.

Police and LCSO officers, fire fighters, EMTs and dispatch personnel are welcome.

Garden Club of Lehigh Acres to meet

The Garden Club of Lehigh Acres will meet on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Fountain Crest Retirement Community, at 1230 Taylor Lane.

It will be a business meeting, and the upcoming schedule for the year will be discussed.

A plant auction will follow.

Seminars scheduled

The Lee County Sheriff's Office will host senior safety education seminars at the UnitedHealthcare Medicare Store, at 6900 Daniels Parkway, Suite 23-C, Fort Myers.

They include:

- Sept. 13: Safety on the Road at 10 a.m.

- Sept. 27: Social Security benefits at 1 p.m.

Both seminars are free.

Attendees will also learn about the various LCSO units and what they do to help protect and serve.

Each will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

General Woman's Club announces speaker

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres will meet on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. in Sweatlock Hall at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 E. Leeland Heights Blvd.

The speaker will be Susan Kostyk, of the Kostyk Insurance Agency. She will talk about insurance for seniors.

Masquerade Gala set

The Shirley Mae Dove Foundation will hold a Masquerade Gala on Nov. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Fort Myers At Bell Tower Shops, at 13051 Bell Tower Drive, Fort Myers.

There will be a silent auction, music and food, with an open bar.

The Calendar Girls will be on hand, with the proceeds to benefit those with breast cancer.

Cost is $35 or $50 for VIP.

Community pool offers variety of classes

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is heated and open year-round.

A wide range of swim lesson skill levels are offered, including adult beginners; all taught by American Red Cross Certified instructors.

Eight classes for $50.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose from a fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday or the ultra-low impact class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. Classes are 45 minutes long in chest deep water.

There are lifeguards-on-duty. Lap swimmers welcome.

Boot camps focus on fitness, nutrition

Healthy Harvest Community Farms, at 607 Mirror Lakes Drive, hosts the following boot camps:

- Mondays and Fridays from 6 to 7 p.m. at Williams Park

- Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Veterans Park

- Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m and Saturdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Healthy Harvest Community Farms

The classes are free; donations are welcome. At least 10 people must be signed up for a class.

Plant, tree sale planned

A plant sale will be held on the last Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon at Lakes Regional Park, at 7330 Gladiolus Drive, Fort Myers.

The selection includes succulents, small trees, native plants, herbs, annuals, bromeliads, rose bushes and more.

Master Gardeners will be available to answer any questions.

There is a $1 per hour parking fee, with a maximum of $5.

Children's choir rehearsing

The Lehigh Children's Choir rehearses from 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays at Cayuga Music Studio, at 1100 Homestead Road.
