Kiwanis lists speakers

The Lehigh Acres Kiwanis Club meets each week at 7:30 a.m. in the Community Room at Hope Hospice, at 1201 Wings Way.

Free autism screening set

The Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida will offer a free autism spectrum disorder screening for children ages 18 months to 5 years old.

Held on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, it will take place on Oct. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the East Lee County Regional Library, at 881 Gunnery Road.

The screenings are administered by an advanced registered nurse practitioner, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders.

A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.

Garden Club of Lehigh Acres to hold tour

The Garden Club of Lehigh Acres will meet on Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. at the residence of Marilyn Cooper, at 1112 E. Barfield St.

The Coopers have invited the club to tour their gardens and will discuss the plants they grow.

A short business meeting and plant auction will follow the tour.

In case of rain, the tour will be moved to Oct. 15.

Forum for candidates

The Lehigh Acres Community Council, in partnership with other organizations, will host a candidate forum on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Lehigh Acres Middle School, at 104 Arthur Ave.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Over 40 candidates running for state and local offices have been invited to participate.

Free and open to the public.

Each candidate has been asked to bring a dessert or drinks for the attendees.

A Little Taste of Greece coming to Fort Myers

The A Little Taste of Greece 2016 food event will be held on Oct. 14-15 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, at 8210 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers.

The menu will include gyros sandwiches, chicken dinner, fries, spanakopita, salad, beverages and beer, plus pastry, Galaktoboureko and cookies.

Edible Gardening Exchange to meet

Edible Gardening Exchange will meet on Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the North Fort Myers Community Center, at 2000 N. Recreation Park Way, North Fort Myers; informal chat at 5:30 p.m.

The speaker is Karen Harty, a Master Gardener. She will discuss growing tomatoes in Southwest Florida; it is a mini-version of her two-hour class on the topic.

Fee from October to May is $10, plus a one-time $10 Lee Parks and Recreation membership fee.

Bring a cup for free coffee and tea; also consider bringing something to share with the group.

Club to host Game Day

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres will host its annual Game Day on Oct. 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Sweatlock Hall at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 E. Leeland Heights Blvd.

It will feature cards, games and a raffle, as well as lunch.

Proceeds to benefit the Annual Scholarship Awards Program.

Costume contest open to youth

Veterans Park Recreation Center will host a costume contest on Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m. at 55 S. Homestead Road.

The competition is open to children ages 13 and under.

It is part of the Make A Difference Day at the park, which will take place from noon to 5 p.m.

Other activities include trick-or-treating, bounce houses, a martial arts demonstration, emergency response vehicle displays, live music and hayrides.

There is no charge to attend.

Masquerade Gala nears

The Shirley Mae Dove Foundation will hold a Masquerade Gala on Nov. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Fort Myers At Bell Tower Shops, at 13051 Bell Tower Drive, Fort Myers.

There will be a silent auction, music and food, with an open bar.

The Calendar Girls will be on hand, with the proceeds to benefit those with breast cancer.

Community pool offers variety of classes

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is heated and open year-round.

A range of swim lesson skill levels are offered, including adult beginners; all taught by American Red Cross Certified instructors.

Eight classes for $50.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose from a fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday or the ultra-low impact class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. Classes are 45 minutes long in chest deep water.

There are lifeguards-on-duty. Lap swimmers welcome.

Boot camps focus on fitness, nutrition

Healthy Harvest Community Farms, at 607 Mirror Lakes Drive, hosts the following boot camps:

- Mondays and Fridays from 6 to 7 p.m. at Williams Park

- Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Veterans Park

- Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m and Saturdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Healthy Harvest Community Farms

The classes are free; donations are welcome. At least 10 people must be signed up for a class.

Farmers markets will be held:

Plant and tree sale scheduled

A plant sale will be held on the last Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon at Lakes Regional Park, at 7330 Gladiolus Drive, Fort Myers.

The selection includes succulents, small trees, native plants, herbs, annuals, bromeliads, rose bushes and more.

Master Gardeners will be available to answer any questions.

There is a $1 per hour parking fee, with a maximum of $5.
