Lee County's Veterans Park Recreation Center is now hosting monthly art workshops.

They will be held on the second Thursday of every month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Artist June DeVincent will teach the workshops, which will cover a variety of techniques and activities for the participants.

"It's for the people who are artists, and it's a way for them to come out and express themselves through art," Nancy Zukaitis, event coordinator for the center, said. "Painting is easy when you don't know and it's difficult when you do, so they say."

A longtime resident of Lehigh Acres, DeVincent has won numerous awards in the past 35 years. Her paintings are recognized as some of the best in Southwest Florida. She has been teaching for the past 20 years, passing on her knowledge and skills to artists who are passionate about what they are doing.

"She's very knowledgeable about all the different techniques and she is very talented," Zukaitis said. "She likes to share what she has with other people."

DeVincent explained that she is excited to be teaching the workshops.

"I am thrilled when I get an interested serious student that wants to grow and learn," she said.

"It's very rewarding when you spend the time after learning and making something art-wise," DeVincent added. "I have been painting all my life, and I love it."

Recently, she donated four of her paintings to different hospitals in the area.

Each workshop will offer a different medium, featuring a range of skills. The one set for May 11 will focus on mixed media, watercolor and charcoal, watercolor and pastel, and graphite and pastel.

DeVincent said the workshops will cover what most art classes do not have the time to teach and go over with students. She noted that she plans on covering those skills in her four-hour workshops.

"These workshops will be focusing on the intricacies of the fine arts," DeVincent said.

"I enjoy sharing what I do with other people who are serious about it," she added.

The center will hold the workshops through the summer, until the fall.

The cost is $35 per workshop for ages 14 and up, and all levels are welcome.

Although DeVincent will have art supplies of her own on hand, participants should bring their own supplies with them, such as paints, brushes and other items needed, for that particular workshop.

People must pre-register to take part. To register, visit online at: or call 239-369-1521.

A complete list of the workshops can also be found online.

The Veterans Park Recreation Center is at 55 Homestead Road S.
