East County Regional Library announces programs for May

Next month's roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following are free to the public:

Adult programs

- Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. May 8, 15 and 22

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours.

- English Cafe

6 p.m. May 8, 15 and 22

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.

- Download Drop-in

11 a.m. May 16

Receive help downloading e-books, movies and more from the online library. Bring your tablets, phones, e-readers, and other digital devices for a hands-on help session.

- FL Friendly Landscaping

9 a.m. May 6

Learn how to have a beautiful landscape that could save you time, energy and money while protecting the future. Registration requested.

- Knitting Nook

5 p.m. May 10 and 24

A group of knitters and crocheters share ideas, techniques and projects. Attendees should bring their own projects, however basic materials are available.

- Home Ownership Prep

10 a.m. May 20

Fifth Third Bank provides a free overview of the home buying process. Registration encouraged.

- Growing Citrus in SWFL

1 p.m. May 20

Learn about growing citrus in Southwest Florida from the VegHeads 4-H youth club. Register in advance for handouts.

Child/teen programs

- The Three Little Pigs & Preschool Science

10 a.m. May 4

Preschoolers and caregivers are invited to a retelling of the tale, with hands-on STEM activities.

- R.E.A.D. to Dogs

11 a.m. May 13

R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve literacy.

- Kids Read Down Fines

4 to 5 p.m. May 25

10 to 11 a.m. May 27

Children and teens can earn a credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 per session.

- East County Anime Club

4:30 p.m. May 16

Watch anime together and make themed crafts. Program limited to grades 6-12.

- DIY Teen Crafts

2 p.m. May 9

Arrange perler beads into your favorite design and then iron them together to make keychains or magnets. For grades 9-12.

- Tween Saturdays: Slime

11 a.m. May 13

Make your own slime using common household ingredients. There will also be a demo of magnetic slime. For grades 5-8.

- Wii and Board Games

2 p.m. May 22

Nintendo Wii games and board games are available in this drop in program. Program limited to high school students.
