Summer camps taking registrations

With the end of the school year fast approaching, Lehigh Acres parents are on the lookout for good summer programs that can entertain and educate their children.

The Lee County Parks and Recreation Department offers a slate of affordable options at the Veterans Park Recreation Center. For ages 6-13, the traditional summer camp runs from June 5 to July 28.

According to Nancy Zukaitis, a senior programer and camp director, the camp features indoor and outdoor activities with educational programs, special speakers, arts and crafts, and athletics.

"It keeps them active throughout the summer and builds lasting friendships," she said.

The park also features a teen camp for ages 12-16, with a curriculum for an older audience.

Zukaitis said the camps are a great way for children to keep active and build social skills while school is out.

"They play games and learn how to be fair and be good sports. We try to encourage character building," she said. "It's a good experience that gets them out of the house and let's them be kids and have fun for the summer."

The camp's official activities run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, according to Zukaitis. However, child supervision is provided from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The camp is separated into eight one-week sessions, which cost $75 each. Registration is underway.

Zukaitis encouraged interested parents to act quickly, because space for the camps is limited to 120 children and the spots are filling up quickly.

To register, participants need to be a member of the facility, which requires a $10 fee for a single membership or $25 for a lifetime family membership. Members can register online after setting up a profile on Lee County's website at:

In addition, the Lehigh Acres Community Pool will offer a Junior Lifeguard camp this summer alongside its normal swimming lessons, which cover water safety, rescues, CPR and first aid. A session will run from June 26-30 for children ages 10-12 and from July 10-14 for children ages 13-15.

The cost is $100; again space is limited, so parents are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

The Veterans Park Recreation Center is at 55 Homestead Road S.

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool is at 1400 W 5th St.
