East County Regional Library presents upcoming activities

The roster of activities for July at the East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages.

The following activities are free to the public:

Adult programs

- Book Discussion: "Lilac Girls" by Martha Hall Kelly

3:30 p.m. July 3

A New York socialite has her hands full at the French consulate, a Polish teenager becomes a courier for the resistance movement and an ambitious young German doctor finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power. The lives of these three women are set on a collision course as they strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten.

4 p.m. July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library.

11 a.m. July 10

Receive personalized help downloading e-books, movies, music and more from the library's online library. Bring your tablets, phones, e-readers and other digital devices for a hands-on help session.

- English Cafe

6 p.m. July 10, 17, 24 and 31

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.

- Writers' Workshop

6 p.m. July 11

Join local writers as they meet each month to practice, share, and discuss various literary art forms. Meetings may vary to include classes, speakers and readings. All are welcome. Registration is requested.

- Knitting Nook

5 p.m. July 12 and 26

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share ideas, techniques and projects. Attendees should bring their own projects however basic materials are available for newcomers. Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library.

- I Can Do That! I Love America Everyday

2:30 p.m. July 15

This patriotic craft involves candle-making and allows participants to express appreciation for the country in honor of July 4. Attendees will also be able to make cards to distribute to friends and family.

Storytime

- Family Storytime

10 a.m. July 13 and 20

Five simple practices get kids ready to read: talking, singing, reading, writing and playing. Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of prereading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

Children/teen programs

- R.E.A.D. to Dogs

11 a.m. July 8

R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of children.

- Writers' Workshop

6 p.m. July 11

Join local writers as they meet each month to practice, share, and discuss various literary art forms. Meetings may vary to include classes, speakers and readings.

- Kids Read Down Fines

10 to 11 a.m. July 29

Children and teens can earn a $2 credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only and applies only to charges on overdue materials. Bring your library card.
