Hitting the big 100

July 14, 2017
Lehigh Acres Citizen

George Briede, a former longtime resident of Lehigh Acres, recently turned 100 years old. A celebration in his honor was held on July 10 at The Palms of Fort Myers, at 2674 Winkler Ave, Fort Myers. Briede was a scout sniper who served in World War II fighting in Guam. He also served during the Battle of Iwo Jima, where a Japanese mortar blinded him in both eyes and caused serious damage to his face. Briede underwent several surgeries to repair his facial injuries and a miniscule of his eyesight later returned. At the celebration, the American Legion Post 323 color guard presented Briede with an American flag for his service to the county. Five generations of his family were present at the party.
