There have been several fraud alerts from the Lee County Sheriff's Office. Caller ID identifies the caller as Dish Network and the caller offers to cut the customer's bill in half. They also offer new equipment and ask for the model number and IP address of the existing equipment; they explain the equipment is out-of-date and offer new equipment for $200.

Some customers have been given the last four digits of their social security number and then asked to verify the last 12. Dish Network never reaches out to customers by phone, email or mail. If you get such a call, hang up!

The grandparent scam is back. The caller will identify themselves as a police officer, an attorney or a doctor, requesting you to wire transfer money or purchase a prepaid card in exchange for the grandchild's release from jail or the hospital. Hang up and call the parents of the child or the child and ask if they are OK - don't send any form of money anywhere.

The IRS Telephone Scam continues to plague our area. The caller threatens a warrant or arrest if a tax payment isn't made. They ask that a prepaid debit card connected to the IRS's EFTPS Voice Response System is required immediately. If you get one of these calls hang up.

The Lehigh Acres Community Council serves as the voice for unincorporated Lehigh Acres.
