Politics ... the religion

To the editor:

The religion of politics is demonstrated daily. The zealots pictured now on the news media depict a fervor not seen in recent memory. And why is this? Some say it is promoted and perpetrated by the liberals in their lament of their party's loss in the last election. Others point out the strong support of President Donald Trump in evidence at his rallies.

In any event it is no longer the politics of old. This administration does not have in the commanding positions lifelong politicians but rather those from the business world who need no gifts or payoffs to direct their decision making. This most assuredly is not the familiar politics of yore. The old guard politicians in Washington are praying to the gods of gifts and favors but now find those coffers devoid of either. And so they remain quiet in the face of violent protests. They pray the rioters will succeed in returning Washington to those days of old. But will they? I think not!

The facade of "go along to get along" has been ripped asunder. Uncertainty is being foretold but if it is coming the fault lies outside of the presidency but lies instead at the feet of the politically disappointed. If we ask the present day youngsters what is "patriotism" we most certainly will have touched upon a subject that is unfamiliar to them. No longer is the country being firmly in first place nor is it a currency for self aggrandizement. And so they march, they protest and they riot in a vain attempt to excavate their own ingrown shards of anger.

We deserve better!
