September roster of activities at the East County Regional Library, at 881 Gunnery Road.

The following activities are free to the public:

Adult programs

– Writers’ Workshop

6 p.m. Sept. 5

Join local writers as they meet each month to practice, share and discuss various literary art forms. Meetings may vary to include classes, speakers and readings. Registration is requested.

– Book Discussion: “The Pecan Man” by Cassie Dandridge Selleck

3:30 p.m. Sept. 11

In the summer of 1976, recently widowed and childless, Ora Lee Beckworth hires a homeless black man, called the Pecan Man by neighborhood children, to mow her lawn. When the police chief’s son is found stabbed to death near the Pecan Man’s camp, the man Ora knows as Eddie is arrested and charged with murder. Twenty-five years later, Ora sets out to tell the truth.

– Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Sept. 11, 18 and 25

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours.

– English Cafe

6 p.m. Sept. 11 and 18

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.

– Knitting Nook

5 p.m. Sept. 13 and 27

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share ideas, techniques and projects. Attendees should bring own projects; basic materials available for newcomers.

– I Can Do That! Southern Belle Hats and Wall Hangings

2:30 p.m. Sept. 16

Participants can create hats and wall hangings to adorn the walls of their homes or the hair on their heads. Registration is required.

– Download Drop-in

11 a.m. Sept. 18

Receive hands-on help downloading e-books, movies, music and more from the library’s online library. Bring tablets, phones, e-readers, and other digital devices.

Storytime

– Toddler Tales

10 a.m. Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27

This interactive and active time for toddlers and their caregiver is designed to advance prereading and social skills. They’ll experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, fingerplays, puppets, singing, music-making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books.

– Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27

Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. The stories and activities are more complex, but just as fun.

– Baby Rhyme Time

10 a.m. Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28

During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance.

– Family Storytime

10:30 a.m. Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28

All-ages storytime that encourages the development of prereading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

Children/teen programs

– Writers’ Workshop

– East County Anime Club

4:30 p.m. Sept. 5 and 19

Interested in anime, manga and Japanese culture? We watch anime together and make themed crafts. Program limited to grades 6-12.

– R.E.A.D. to Dogs

11 a.m. Sept. 9

R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of children.

– Wii and Board Games

2 p.m. Sept. 11

Nintendo Wii games and board games will be available at this drop-in program. First come, first served. Limited to high school students.

– Life-Size “Angry Birds”

2 p.m. Sept. 13

Play an “in real life” version of the popular video game “Angry Birds.” Program limited to high school students.

– Peace Day Fun

2 p.m. Sept. 21

Learn about and celebrate Peace Day with games and a craft.

– DIY Teen Crafts

2 p.m. Sept. 26

Perler beading is back. Arrange beads into whatever design you’d like, then iron them together to make keychains or magnets. For grades 9-12.

– Kids Read Down Fines

10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 30

Children and teens can earn a $2 credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Applies to charges on overdue materials.

– Tween Saturday: DIY Games

11 a.m. Sept. 30

Make your own cheap and easy games. There will be balloon rockets, DIY bouncy balls, building games and more. Program limited to tweens in grades 5-8.
