The Cape Coral Police Depart-ment is taking applications for its 15th annual Shop With a Cop.

Sponsored by the CCPD's "Do The Right Thing" program, Shop With a Cop enables Cape police officers to spend positive one-on-one time with Cape children whose families are having financial issues. The goal is to reach at-risk youth and provide them with a chance to holiday shop for themselves and their family.

The event will take place on Dec. 16; the child must be available.

"Where else can a child whose family is having financial difficulties be offered the opportunity to experience this one-in-a-lifetime memorable experience?" Anella "Joy" Nyack, community outreach projects coordinator for the CCPD, said in an email. "It is truly one of the best programs we have."

Each year, the CCPD chooses 30 to 40 students to participate in the program. The youth are picked up by police escorts and taken to Walmart, where they are provided with a gift card to use for shopping. With the officers' help, they select gifts for each family member, as well as something for themselves.

According to Nyack, the students receive $50 to spend on themselves, along with $20 for every adult and sibling over the age of 8, $15 for siblings ages 1 to 7 and $10 for each infant in the household.

After shopping at Walmart, the participants and officers head to the Cape Coral Police Department, where they will wrap the presents. After a free lunch, the students and presents are returned home.

"The Do the Right Thing program reinforces the idea of sharing and giving while promoting the idea that law enforcement role models are crucial to the development of our youth," she said. "The positive one-on-one experience each student receives from Shop With a Cop is one that is never forgotten."

As of Tuesday, the CCPD had received nearly two dozens applications.

"I've received 20 applications so far, with the majority of the applications coming in by the Nov. 8 deadline," Nyack said.
