American Gold Star Mother’s Memorial to be unveiled

November 28, 2017
Lehigh Acres Citizen

An unveiling of the American Gold Star Mother's Memorial at Four Mile Eco Cove Park will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Hosted by Rainbow Memorials at Sea, Capt. Pat and Nancy McCarn, the memorial plaque will honor American Gold Star Mothers "for their sacrifice, service and patriotism."

Refreshments will be served immediately following the unveiling, which is open to the public.

American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. was incorporated in 1929, obtaining a federal charter from the U.S. Congress. It began with 25 mothers living in the Washington D.C. area and soon expanded to include affiliated groups throughout the nation. On June 23, 1936, a joint congressional resolution designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother's Day, a day that has been observed each year by a presidential proclamation. The original unveiling was set for Sept 24 but was postponed due to Hurricane Irma.

Last year, the Gold Star Mothers partnered with Wreaths Across America and the SWFL Gold Star Mothers Chapter formed in Fort Myers. The recently formed chapter has 15 members. Beth Haely serves as its president.

Four Mile Eco Cove Park is at 2500 S.E. 24th St., Cape Coral.
