TNR workshop set

The Gulf Coast Humane Society and Fortunate Ferals will host a free Trap-Neuter-Return workshop Jan. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at the shelter's campus, at 2010 Arcadia St., Fort Myers.

It will provide information and education on how to trap feral cats, as well as how to bring them to the GCHS spay and neuter clinic.

They also will learn how to care for the cat pre- and post-surgery, as well as how to respond to upset neighbors.

Participants will receive five free spay or neuters for feral cats, which can be used at any time.

County band to perform

The Lee County Community Band will present a Christmas concert on Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. at Cape Coral High School, at 2300 Santa Barbara Blvd.

The concert is free; donations will be accepted.

- March 11

- April 8

Comprised of professional and amateur musicians from three counties, the band rehearses Thursdays in Fort Myers.

Annual Old Fashioned Family Fun planned

The Lee County 4-H will host its fourth annual Old Fashioned Family Fun on Jan. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Veterans Park, at 55 Homestead Road S.

Admission is free.

There will be a petting zoo, plus activities for families to participate in like racing, throwing, running and jumping.

Parents are encouraged to participate with their child.

Participants can turn in filled out "passports" to win prizes donated by area sponsors.

SWFL Concert Band to present concert

The Southwest Florida Concert Band will perform Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. First Baptist Church of Lehigh Acres, at 200 Lee Blvd.

The band will collect donations for of non-perishable food items for Lehigh Community Services.

The concert is free; donations will be accepted.

Future concert dates include:

- Feb. 18

- March 18

- April 15

The band is always accepting new musicians who play at a senior high school level, college level or above. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Annual Writing Contest taking submissions

The Gulf Coast Writers Association is taking submissions for its Annual Writing Contest.

The three top entries in each category will receive a cash reward.

The word count for fiction, nonfiction, and children's is 1,500 words maximum. For poetry, there is a maximum of 40 lines.

Entry is open to the public.

Submission deadline is Jan. 31.

Pool offering classes

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is heated and open year-round.

A range of swim lesson skill levels are offered, including adult beginners; all taught by American Red Cross Certified instructors.

Eight classes for $50.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose from a fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday or the ultra-low impact class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. Classes are 45 minutes long in chest deep water.

Lap swimmers welcome.

Plant, tree sale planned

A plant sale will be held on the last Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon at Lakes Regional Park, at 7330 Gladiolus Drive, Fort Myers.

It includes succulents, small trees, native plants, herbs, annuals, bromeliads, rose bushes and more.

Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions.

There is a $1 per hour parking fee, with a maximum of $5.
