Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District will hold a coordination meeting in preparation for the next storm season.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, March 1, and will go over issues such as infrastructure preparation and repair, human and social services, shelter, connectivity and coordination of emergency resources.

According to Commissioner Michael Welch, this is the time to start preparing for this year's hurricane season.

"Now our work begins in the pre-planning. I have also asked for representatives of the county government as well as utility service providers to join us," said Welch.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through Nov. 30 each year. This is the time frame when hurricanes are most likely to form, but forecasters also acknowledge that storms can and do occasionally form out of season.

LA-MSID hosted a similar meeting back in October 2017 following hurricane Irma.

"Our meeting last October demonstrated great interest in assuring that this community is as best prepared as possible. My hope is that we have monthly meetings through the storm season and I believe that we are progressing in a way that will have us prepared as much as possible," said Welch.

The luncheon meeting will feature an agenda that outlines the operations plans.

"An agenda will be provided with elements of the work plan as we move on into the future," Welch said.

During last month's regular meeting commissioners decided to add a new position to the board. The individual elected would oversee emergency operations including coordinating efforts with local and state officials and organizations during emergency situations.

"We are now just five months away from hurricane season. I think it's time to put together a job description and create a position that will oversee communications with other governmental agencies," said Welch.

Fellow board members agreed and unanimously voted to elect Welch to fill that role and become the Emergency Operations Director and Coordinator representative for the board. Welch will hold the position for one-year term at which time the most immediate past-chairperson would step into fill the position.

According to district board members, the position was established to ensure the board's ability to work with local agencies to formulate plans and keep lines of communications open during a community incident or natural disaster.

The Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District will hold its next regular meeting on Feb. 26, at 6 p.m. at the LA-MSID, at 601 East County Lane. For information, visit the LA-MSID website at www.myecwcd.net
