The 44th annual Lehigh Acres Spring Festival kicked off its "The Wild, Wild, West" themed event with a funfilled weekend that included an opening ceremony, parade and the Miss Spring Festival Pageant.

On Sunday, contestants took the stage to compete for the titles of both queen and princess of this year's festival. Each contestant was judged within several categories, with some choosing to enter the talent portion of the pageant.

Cassandra Browning walked away with the title of Miss Spring Festival this year. According to her mother, Chrissy Browning, Cassandra has competed in the pageant for the last seven years.

"I think this pageant is a very important part of the festival. It brings about a sense of community and hometown spirit," said Browning.

Each of the contestants had to go through a preliminary interview prior to competing.

"It's a great experience for these girls. It helps build up self-esteem and prepare them for public speaking and the interviewing process," Browning said.

Awards were provided for the winners of the pageant by local businesses including Country Style Ice Cream, Envy Model and Talent and Footnotes Dance and Music Studio.

For the younger festival goers, there were ongoing shows at the Nick's Kids Show stage. Children got a chance to interact, dance and sing with the show's hosts.

The Spring Festival continues throughout this week and has a slew of events on the calendar including a BBQ cook-off on Wednesday; cowboy and cowgirl contest on Thursday and hot wing eating contest on Friday at 7 p.m. There are also rides and games going on daily.

According to the Lehigh Spring Festival Association President Bob Dutka, this is a community event that has nothing to do with Lee County so it needs the community's support.

"It's all non-profit. The money we make goes for funding so we can continue to hold the festival every year. All the people involved in the festival are volunteering their time," said Dutka.

Daily events include:

Nicks's Kids Show - Multiple shows on the Midway Stage

Tolve Productions Carnival - Rides and Games

Commodore Cutter - SW Florida's Cowboys

Sandy's Saloon - Open daily until 9:30 p.m.

Admission is free. Ride wristbands to cover the remaining days, unlimited rides, are $60. The Lehigh Acres Spring Festival is located at 55 Homestead Rd S, Lehigh Acres. For more, go to the festival's web site,
