VFW offers programs for veterans

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4174 has provided a helping hand for many years, helping thousands of veterans in financial distress.

VFW Post 4174 Commander Terry Daughtery said their relief fund, which has been offered since the VFW started, works with numerous outlets to offer help to veterans in distress who need to pay a bill. For instance if a veteran needs help paying their power bill, he said they can bring their bill to the post and they write a check and pay the utility bill.

"We will take care of that for them. We don't hand out cash. We don't feel comfortable doing it that way. We judge people on an individual basis. We are a small post and try to do the best we can with what we got," he said.

Those in need have to prove they are out of options and show their DD 214 papers to prove they are a veteran.

"There is a committee and they decide if we are going to help them or not. We write the check and pay the bill. If they need groceries we go and buy them," Daughtery said.

Throughout the years, they have helped thousands of veterans through this program.

Shannon Roussey, also with the VFW, said a few weeks ago they began a food program, providing food packages for veterans in need. He said since the program is still new they are working out all the kinks.

"We have not made our first package yet," he said.

Those in need of help are asked to contact the VFW. To be eligible they have to have both their DD 214 papers and a picture ID.

"We always ask for proof that they are a veteran, so we can honor that program appropriately," Roussey said. "We are here for our veterans. We love them and that is what we do."
