Community council to host a political candidate meet-and-greet

August 1, 2018

On Saturday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. the Lehigh Acres Community Council will host a candidate forum at Veterans Park Recreation Center. Residents are encouraged to come and get to more know about the candidates running for local government positions.

Each candidate will have a table for their campaign literature, a limited amount of time on the microphone to speak in front of attendees; and three hours of meet-and-greet time with those in attendance. The forum will promptly start at 11 a.m. and end around 2 p.m.

Each election season the community council aligns with supporting agencies to host one of the largest attended forums for candidates in the community.

According to Community Council President, the council has had a great turn-out in past years.

"We have had an amazing turn-out during our previous forums," said Anglickis.

Besides getting a chance to meet and get to know those running for office, guests can enjoy a free ice cream social during the event.

The council will also host a public hearing during its monthly meeting to be held Aug. 20. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. and is in regards to a proposed church, which would be located at 4716 Lee Blvd. in Lehigh Acres.

The same request for a zoning amendment on commercial zoned land located at 4716 Lee Blvd., went before the Lehigh Acres Architectural, Planning & Zoning Review Board earlier this year.

Back in May, TDM Consulting presented on behalf of the applicant, who was proposing to amend a master concept plan. The zoning amendment would allow for a 3,696-square-foot place of worship instead of its current zoning of the 22,000-square-foot parcel for commercial/retail use.

The project was denied by LAARB board members because the church would occupy a fraction of a space where there could instead be 22,000 square feet of commercial/retail space.

Both the council's regular meeting and zoning hearing are open to the public.

The Lehigh Acres Community Council will hold its next meeting on Aug. 20 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lee County Sheriff's Office East District substation, at 1301 Homestead Road N.
