Make Attic Babies at East County Regional Library

By MEGHAN McCOY ( , Lehigh Acres Citizen

Adults are invited to attend a craft making program at East County Regional Library, a program offered throughout the year called "I Can Do That."

Youth Services Programming Coordinator Amy-Jane McWilliam said East County Regional Library has been incorporating more adult programing to fill the need of what their patrons are requesting.

"Adults want to learn to do this stuff too for themselves," McWilliam said.

With the "maker movement" attracting all ages, the program "I Can Do That" has been offered for three years at the library by Bonnie Frato.

The theme of the Saturday, Sept. 1 "I Can Do That" is Attic Babies. The program is offered from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

"They have to call the library and sign up. The reason I need that is because I bring kits," Frato said.

Frato, a crafter of many years and a teacher, said her program is friendly and provides participants with something to bring home.

The September theme, Attic Babies, she said are not the fancy, pretty dolls with eyelashes and fancy dresses, but rather are made of muslin fabric that is dipped in tea to dye them. The fabric, she explained is cotton and not a permanent press.

"I usually pre-sew them because of time," Frato said. "We have to dress them and decorate them."

The clothes, she said, are very simple.

"They are going to make the dresses and we are going to do the faces. The faces are with a magic marker," Frato said.

She said the whole purpose of the program is for those who do not believe they are good at crafts walk away saying they can do that.

The October program will feature creating gift baskets and the November program will feature a holiday surprise gift.
