Katie Scoville, assistant principal at East Lee County High School has been named Lee County Assistant Principal of the year. Scoville was also nominated for the Florida Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year award.

School District of Lee County Superintendent Dr. Greg Adkins said Scoville's abilities as both an educator and administrator have helped transform the school.

"Katie is a big part of the reason East Lee is turning around its academic performance," he said.

"I am surprised and humbled to receive this recognition. It's very gratifying when our long hours and hard work are acknowledged," said Scoville upon receiving the award.

Katie Scoville moved to East Lee High School as assistant principal in January after working at all three grade levels and the District Offices. Principal Melissa Robery says Scoville was the first person she asked to join her at East Lee.

"Her most powerful contribution is in helping students who have felt years of frustration meeting the standard on comprehensive achievement tests, regain their confidence and show significant improvement," Robery explained in her recommendation letter. "She has a drive to make sure our students and staff never, never, never give up."

East Lee County High School is one of the local schools that took part in Lee County School District's turnaround principal program, which was aimed at turning around poor-performing schools in the school district.

The district selects from its best leaders to take part in the turnaround principal program. East Lee County High School was ranked as one of the school district's worst-performing schools and rated a D school for four consecutive school years prior to Robery and Scoville coming on board.

According to Scoville, their success this past year is due to teamwork.

"We had worked together prior in the curriculum program downtown and Principal Robery asked me to join her when she took the position at East. The first step we took was to split up the departments for each assistant principal. I currently oversee the math department," said Scoville.

Scoville also explained that they put a lot of emphasis on making sure that the standards taught in each class are at the correct level.

"We really focused heavily on making sure that the activities teachers are doing in class are aligned with the right grade level and will prepare the students for end of the semester. For Algebra and Geometry 1 for example, students tested at a 22 percent proficiency level during the first exam. By third quarter, their level went up to 28 percent. After just four months the students were up to 34 percent proficiency for the FSA," said Scoville.

Other areas of concern were student engagement and forming better relationships between teachers and students.

"This year our big focus was on gaining more student engagement during class. Also on finding ways to build student/teacher relationships. We recently brought in the Flippen Group and participated in their program; Capturing Kid's Hearts," said Scoville.

The goal of the program is to help administrators and teachers improve the five key indicators of school performance: fewer discipline referrals, improved attendance, higher student achievement, lower dropout rates, and higher teacher satisfaction.

Nominations for Scoville as Florida Assistant Principal of the Year will be sent to the Florida Department of Education by Superintendent Dr. Greg Adkins. The DOE will announce the finalists in January and the winners by early March. Each award comes with a $5,000 cash prize.
