Healthy Harvest Farms seeking community’s help in purchasing new tractor

Healthy Harvest Farms is in great need of another tractor and is seeking the community's help in acquiring one.

Gary Dittman, chairman of the Healthy Harvest Farms board, said a tractor that farm has been using for a few years became unavailable at the end of December.

"We are going to move on and take the high road and, hopefully, somehow raise enough money, or someone who is a wonderfully good citizen (will help with) a lease, or loan a new or used tractor," he said.

Dittman said they would also be very receptive to someone who has a tractor and is willing to come out to the farm and let them borrow, or use the tractor during their planting season.

"We are in desperate need of a new one," he said. "We use the tractor to plow the fields and turn over the ground."

Right now everything is being done by hand. Dittman said they have a small tiller they use to plow the fields, but they have to pick up the dirt by hand and get the weeds out by hand.

"It's very intensive labor orientation," he said. "Any kind of mechanical help would be extremely helpful."

Dittman said the board was meeting last week to have a discussion about possible fundraisers to raise money for a tractor. In the meantime, he said if someone could help them out that would be fantastic.

"Right now we are in the middle of grant writing, our primary focus. After that, we will plan a couple of events to raise some money," Dittman said.

Those who would like to help Healthy Harvest Farms can contact Dittman at gary@healthyharvestfarms.org, or call (312) 286-0786.

The primary focus of the farm is to provide food for the local community, local charities and those who are less fortunate. The farm focuses on teaching children at various levels how to plant, when to plant, as well as the value of growing their own food and trying to get them excited about the opportunity to work in the soil.
