The Sons of the American Legion Post 323 will hold its monthly horseshoe tournament this weekend, again for camaraderie and a cause.

Second Vice Commander for the Sons of American Legion Post 323 Tom Lightner said their monthly tournament is always held on the last Saturday of the month. It has taken place for the past two years as a way to bring people together.

The next tournament will be held Saturday, July 27, at 1 p.m. The double elimination tournament has a $10 entry fee. The fee gets thrown in a pot for first and second place.

"It's always open to the public. There is a blind draw for partners," Lightner said. "We average about 12 to 14 (players) a month the last three months. Before that we had eight to 10. We had a big one on the Fourth of July. We had 20 players."

Those interested in playing in the tournament can show up the day of the event and seek out Lightner.

"I'm usually there at 9 in the morning. They can start practicing at 11:30 if they want," he said.

The Sons also hold a bigger tournament on the holidays, complete with food and entertainment. The next big tournament will take place the weekend of Labor Day with a big Clam Bake.

"We raise the entry fee to $15 and put so much money into the charities," Lightner said.

The American Legion is at 1124 Ashlar Ave. behind the Burger King on Homestead Road.
