An investment in the future

To the editor:

Keeping a civilization together in peace and in prosperity for ALL requires constant, diligent, intelligent and impartial maintenance in both the short-term and the long-term aspects. Such maintenance costs significant money, but this maintenance also saves significant money. These costs and savings occur in both visible short-term and in more subtle, long-term situations.

The issue runs something like this :

In order to save $1 in visible, short-term maintenance costs, how much subtle, long-term maintenance costs are many Conservatives willing to bear -- even after being informed of the facts? It is that now vs later thing!!

Put another way, how much are dedicated Conservatives willing to ultimately pay out in order to right now keep, say, one thin dime away from a Welfare Mother -- for reasons of short-term political advantage and drama??

There is, of course, no pat answer - the point here is to try to stimulate constructive thought: Consider the ancient phrase, "penny wise, dollar foolish!!"

This idea is also the strong light under which we must seriously consider the potential advantages to the overall Nation of Non-Profit, for nearly-free higher education as well as non-profit health insurance, non-profit health services and non-profit medications.

Profit very definitely has its place, but it must be kept in its place!!! Neither education nor healthcare (not to mention prisons) are acceptable places.
