Let the people provide input

January 29, 2020
Lehigh Acres Citizen

To the editor:

I am writing in response to the Lee County Manager's recent opinion on the ridiculous use and abuse of their ex parte communication law to gag the public by saying no one has been prosecuted. Why do you even have this law? It does nothing to protect the public.

I ask Lee County Commissioners to get rid of the rule and stop intimidating the citizens!

The Lee County Attorney communications I received certainly suggest penalties for trying to express opinions on important zoning actions.

These communications are not only disgusting and threaten freedom of speech but are used as a ploy to discourage honest public input and comment through direct communication with our elected public officials.

I personally received several threatening communications when I expressed my concerns over the lime rock mining issue on SR82. It was insulting and extremely disturbing to be threatened for exercising my citizen's right to give input about the health, safety and welfare of the surrounding environment where I live.

Commissioners, there is no reason to keep this prohibition on the books. End this intimidation it now!
