Is a half-truth a real lie?
To The Editor
A half-truth is not only a lie but it is an abhorrence when it is intended to deceive for political and/or personal gain. Such is the case considering an article from the area’s socialist rag that described a meeting chaired by a local mayor wanna-be concerning our economic “crisis.”
The article was about who was “to blame” for the economy. The blame was basically assigned to the bankers (first half-truth) and our (the public’s) insatiable desire to “have it all now” mentality (second half-truth).
Let me address the latter first: the days of even thinking about having to save for a home and then to responsibly pay for it all by yourself are ludicrous by today’s standards; there is a huge portion of our population that believe they have a “right” to own whatever they feel they should own, be insured and to live off others.
As for the banks they made bad loans according to federal law. The programs of the Carter and Clinton administrations imposed sanctions against lending institutions that didn’t give preference (entitlement) to minorities and illegals. Requirements such a having to prove employment, provide mortgage insurance and providing any documentation to prove credit-worthiness were abolished.
Did the banks know this was bad business? Most certainly they did but they were following the law and they knew they would be reimbursed by our socialist system.
What does this mean? Those entitled persons are going to have their homes, their insurance and all the socialist “benefits” and guess who is going to pay for all of it?
The outright shame and disgust, to me, of all this is that this same mayoral wanna-be and his ilk (the pro-incorporationists) is going to use these half-truths in their next bid for incorporation. They are going to declare that this crisis could have been mitigated if we only had (on a local level) a brand new city with “local control.” Gimme a break!
