Leona Rowland
Leona “Lee” Rowand, 92, of Lehigh Acres, who has lived at Winkler Court, a life care home in Fort Myers for the past eight years, died Nov. 30, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Leona and James Hart of Philadelphia, Pa. She had two sisters and two brothers. The family moved to Berlin, N.J., near Cherry Hill, where she attended Haddon Heights High School and enjoyed Frank Sinatra, the Atlantic City boardwalk, seashore camping and roller skating.
She was married to Lewis Rowand on New Year’s Eve in 1934 and celebrated in Times Square in New York City.
She worked for RCA, Whitman Chocolates and for various dry cleaning stores in the New Jersey area.
She and her husband moved to Lehigh Acres more than 35 years ago.
Rowand attended Faith Lutheran Church and was a member of Lehigh Acres Senior Center. She spent many hours typing to 25 pen pals, playing the piano, crocheting afghans, embroidering samplers, growing house plants and driving her sporty red Chrysler 5th Avenue with country western music on the radio.
Surviving are twin daughters, Janet (Rudy) Ferster and Joan (Robert) Ferster of Lehigh Acres. Also surviving are six grandchildren, five great grandsons, a great granddaughter and two great, great granddaughters with five generations living in Lehigh.
At her request, no services will be held. The family suggests that as a tribute to her memory that contributions may be made to the new Hope Hospice House to be built in Lehigh Acres.
