‘Do The Right Thing’ students are honored
Humanitarian concern, honesty, integrity, positive decision making and healthy lifestyle choices were recognized last week during the Lee County Sheriff’s
Office’s fifth Do The Right Thing awards ceremony of the school year.
The ceremony was held Thursday, January 15, in the Lee County Commission Chambers in the Old Lee County Courthouse in downtown Fort Myers.
This month’s 15 winners come from Fort Myers, North Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, Estero, Bonita Springs, Alva and Sanibel Island, said program director John McGraw. Those from the East Side included the following:
Logan Reason is from North Fort Myers, and Jacob Bruno is from Alva. Both are 5th grade students at Bayshore Elementary School.
McGraw said that every morning Jacob and Logan come to the school library to volunteer their services and that both possess a wholesome attitude and willingness to help students, as well as the librarian.
Abby Kohler is from Lehigh Acres, a 7th grade student at Alva Middle School.
She was honored because she was at a party when a child began to choke. She wrapped her arms around the child and began the Heimlich maneuver, which
dislodged an obstruction in the child’s airway. She had remembered the use of this procedure from when it had been performed on her as a child, McGraw said.
Tila Phillips of Fort Myers is a 10th grade student at Riverdale High School.
She was honored being helpful and respectful and a hardworking student who offers help to teachers with organizing and distributing paperwork in class
without being asked. McGraw said she often lends or gives paper or pencils to other students in need. Although she works part-time, outside of school, at a
senior citizens home, she always manages to be in class early and completes all her work with care and excellence, said McGraw.
Caitlin Glenz of Lehigh Acres is a 9th grade student at Lehigh Senior High School. McGraw said that Caitlin was in physical education class when she noticed the school’s site worker laying on the ground. She called the nearest adult for help. McGraw said the site worker had fallen because his leg had become numb. Paramedics were summoned and the worker was transported to the hospital.
Other students throughout the county included:
Chloe Tsai of Fort Myers, a 3rd grade student at Noonan Academy; Blake Larson of Estero, a 3rd grade student at Pinewoods Elementary School;
Kimberly Fiedler, a 12th grade student at Cypress Lake High School; Aja Harvey an 11th grade student.
Madalyn Musser, a 10th grade student; Paul Gavin of
Sanibel Island, an 11th grade student; Aurora Mitchell, grade student. All four are students at Cypress Lake High School.
Katherine Rose McGinniss, a 9th grade student at Estero High School; Hunter Edward Hendry, a 9th grade student at Estero High School; and Lourdes Mejia, an 8th grade student at Bonita Springs Middle School.
