No to confirmation of Tim Geithner
To The Editor,
It is the role of the Senate to advise and consent with respect to a president’s Cabinet selections. I adhere to the principle that, assuming qualifications, a President gets to choose the members of his Cabinet.
But, at a time when our economy is facing the most severe challenges it has faced in generations, we need leaders who inspire trust and confidence in government. This is especially true of our next secretary of the Treasury, who will work to lead our nation out of the current financial crisis.
The Treasury secretary oversees the Internal Revenue Service and is responsible for administering and enforcing internal revenue laws. Given these responsibilities, I find Tim Geithner’s actions related to his personal taxes disqualify him for the post. I therefore oppose his confirmation.
