Low-cost pet clinic set at Veterans Park Feb. 7

By Staff | Jan 28, 2009

Lee County Animal Services will hold a Low-cost Pet Vaccination & Microchip ID Clinic on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Veterans Park at 55 Homestead Rd. in Lehigh Acres. .

Pets will get an annual cat (FVRCP) or dog (DHLPP+C) booster, rabies vaccine, and microchip ID for $25 plus the cost of the pet license.Cash will be the only accepted method of payment and appointments are not necessary, said Ria Brown of

Lee County Animal Services

A microchip ID is recognized as the number one means of returning pets to their owners. Therefore, the microchip ID is required as part of the $25 package unless the pet already has one, she said.

The microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is implanted by injection under the pet’s skin. Each microchip has a unique number which will identify the owner. Unlike tags they cannot be lost or removed, Brown said.

In addition to vaccines and microchip IDs owners can also purchase their pet’s Lee County license, required by Lee County ordinance, at the clinic.

A one year license is issued for pets receiving a one-year rabies vaccine. A three-year license is issued for pets receiving a three-year rabies vaccine. License fees are as follows:

One-year license for puppies and kittens under one year of age – $8.

One-year license for sterilized pets – $8.

Three-year license for sterilized pets – $15.

One-year license for unsterilized pets – $35.

Three-year license for unsterilized pets – $65.

Animal Services encourages all pet owners to keep their dogs, cats and ferrets up-to-date on vaccinations, Brown said.

Lee County experienced increases in positive distemper cases in 2008 so annual boosters are essential to keep pets healthy, she said. Dogs, cats, and ferrets four months and older are required by Florida State law to be vaccinated against rabies as it is a fatal virus transmissible to humans and pets.

Pet owners interested in having their pet sterilized through Lee County Animal Services Low-cost Spay/Neuter Program can obtain a form at the clinic or download a form from the agency’s website at www.LeeLostPets.com, and bring the form to the clinic on February 7.They will be contacted at a later date to schedule the appointment for their pet’s sterilization, Brown said.
