Encore performance set Jan. 30, 31 at East Lee county High School
The Drama Club of East Lee County High School will present an encore performance of Antigone, by Sophocles, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of ELCHS on Friday, Jan. 30 and again on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Antigone tells the story of the title character, daughter of Oedipus (the former king of Thebes, who unknowingly killed his father and married his mother, and who renounced his kingdom upon discovering his actions), and her fight to bury her brother Polyneices against the edict of her uncle, Creon, the new king of Thebes.
It is a story that pits the laws of the gods – “unwritten laws” – against the laws of humankind, family ties against civic duty, and man against woman.
The play lends itself to the soap opera type genre, with plot twists and turns, resulting in many deaths.
The play was written in 440 BC, but has a theme that is universal in appeal, and still timely.
Antigone marks the first tragedy presented by the Drama Club of the school as well as the first production of the season.
Due to the very positive review the play received, when first performed in December 2008, Principal Ron Davis has requested this encore performance. The students of ELCHS are excited to bring this drama to the stage, Davis said.
The production crew consists of students in the Stagecraft class, many of who Antigone is the first play they have ever worked on. The cast includes senior Lisbeth Rodriguez as Antigone, several football players and a multiracial, multiethnic supporting ensemble.
The play is directed by Laurence De Weever, with costumes by Mary Ciccarone, and an original musical score by Randy Johnson. Lighting design by senior Charles Lammy, sound by Angel Hernandez. Set design by Laurence De Weever with set construction by the students in the build construction class.
