Deputies nab driver in stolen car

By Staff | Jan 30, 2009

The Lee County Sheriff’s office today said that on Thursday, January 29, shortly before 3 p.m., they received information that a green 2009 Saturn vehicle, reported stolen out of Manatee County, was traveling southbound on I-75 en route to Lee County.

Multiple agencies, including the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol, assisted in tracking the vehicle as the driver made his way into North Fort Myers, authorities said.

Investigators learned the vehicle was equipped with the On-Star system, allowing deputies to track the vehicle’s location, while following at a safe distance without having to engage in a pursuit. As the suspect traveled along Bayshore Road toward the intersection of Bayshore and Slater, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed in front of the CVS, located at 6391 Bayshore Road, North Fort Myers, authorities said.

Deputies arrived on the scene within moments. However, the suspect was able to get out of the stolen car and run into a nearby wooded area, investigators said. A perimeter was established and a search of the area involving the Lee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 and Aviation Units ensued.

A short search of the area led investigators in the Julia Park mobile home park where they located the suspect, identified as Keith Webster (DOB 5/28/81), hiding behind an abandoned trailer located at 6430 Johnson Street, authorities said. Webster was arrested and taken into custody without incident.

Webster’s most recent address is listed as 2223 South Street, Fort Myers. He is being charged with grand auto theft (3rd degree).
