Man accused of car theft arrested in North Fort Myers
A Fort Myers man accused of stealing a car in Manatee County was apprehended in North Fort Myers Thursday after he lost control of the vehicle and crashed in front of the CVS on Bayshore Road.
Keith Webster, 27, of 2223 South Street, is being charged with grand auto theft after he was found hiding behind an abandoned trailer at 6430 Johnson Street, officials said. Webster was arrested and taken into custody without incident.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office had received information that a green 2009 Saturn vehicle, reported stolen out of Manatee County, was traveling southbound on I-75 en route to Lee County at approximately 3 p.m. Thursday. Multiple agencies, including the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol, assisted in tracking the vehicle as the driver made his way into North Fort Myers. Investigators learned the vehicle was equipped with the On-Star system, allowing deputies to track the vehicle’s location, while following at a safe distance without having to engage in a pursuit. As the suspect traveled along Bayshore Road towards the intersection of Bayshore and Slater, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed in front of the CVS at 6391 Bayshore Road, officials said.
Deputies arrived on the scene within moments. However, the driver was able to get out of the stolen car and run into a nearby wooded area. A perimeter was established and a search of the area involving the Lee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 and Aviation Units ensued. A short search of the area led investigators in the Julia Park mobile home park where they located Webster, officials said.
He was taken into custody and then transported to the Lee County Jail.
