Building permits continue downward spiral

By Staff | Feb 2, 2009

The ailing economy continued to plague builders and prospective homeowners with little activity in January.

Builders in unincorporated Lee County, including all of Lehigh Acres, pulled 13 permits for single-family houses in January, collectively valued at more than $7.7 million.

That compares to 28 permits issued for the previous month and 45 issued in January 2008, said

Mary Gibbs, Lee County Community Development Department today in a release to the media.

Also in January, permits were issued for four multi-family units all duplexes compared to four the previous month and 16 in January 2008.

Commercial permitting was valued at more than $1.2 million from nine permits in January, compared to $862,024 in the previous month and nearly $18 million in January 2009, Gibbs said.
