Lehigh accident claims life of Tampa man

By Staff | Feb 6, 2009

A Tampa man is dead following an accident on State Road 82 in the area of Homestead Rd. that occurred Feb. 4.

Lee County Sheriff’s investigators said that around 8:16 a.m., they were called to a traffic accident on State Road 82 in Lehigh Acres and that initial reports indicated that a truck, a 2002 Chevrolet, drove off the highway, through a roadside canal, and into a wooded area.

Deputies arrived on scene and immediately made their way through the wooded area to the disabled vehicle. Inside the truck, deputies found the driver, identified as Wilder Bedoya, 47, unconscious. The responding deputy noticed a large cut on Bedoya’s forehead that was bleeding badly. She immediately began first-aid procedures until emergency medical personnel arrived on scene, authorities said.

Once medical personnel arrived on scene, Bedoya was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. On Feb. 5, Bedoya died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the accident.

Bedoya’s address is listed as 7717 Bingham Court, Tampa, Florida 33625.

The investigation reveals that a rock made contact with Bedoya’s windshield while he was traveling along State Road 82, authorities said. The rock is believed to have broken through the windshield and struck Bedoya in the head, knocking him unconscious, and causing him to lose control of his vehicle.

Investigators said it is unknown where the rock came from, whether it was laying in the roadway, or if it fell from a passing vehicle. It is not believed foul play was involved in causing the accident.

Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at (239) 477-1000.
