LSHS educator wins teacher of year award today
A math teacher at Lehigh Senior HIgh School got the surprise of his life this morning when members of the board of education and the system’s superintendent, Dr. James Browder along with the media walked into his classroom and declared he was the winner of the Lee County Teacher of the Year competition.
Supporting a black eye which he received playing racketball, he said maybe that a lucky thing to have happened.
Terry Huge has been teaching at Lehigh Senior High School since it opened in 1993. He and his wife were among the first teachers.
Fellow educators and students said he was an “awesome teacher,” always ready to help and mentor students and fellow teachers.
Dr. Jane Kuckel, chairman of the Lee County School Board, led the army of media and educators along with the school’s principal, Jeff Spiro.
Huge, 53, now goes into regional competition and if he wins that, he will go the state level to compete as Teacher of the Year.
He was one of five finalists in the competition that was announced more than a week ago.
He said he sort of wondered if he might win since he had an interview with Browder last week.
“But I didn’t know. It’s a wonderful thing to do for me. I appreciate it so much. I couldn’t do it without the support of my students and fellow teachers,” he said.
