Lehigh leaders meet Sunday to discuss Obama’s Stimulus Plan
Community leaders of Lehigh Acres have called a special meeting tonight, Sunday, at 6 p.m. at the Living Waters Church, located in the former Fleet Reserve Building, on Sunshine Blvd., to talk about President Barack Obama’s visit to Fort Myers which is planned Tuesday afternoon.
Damon Shelor, the president of the Lehigh Community Council and a member of the Lehigh Acres Community Planning Corp. (LACPC), said those from the Council, the Lehigh Acres Planning Corp., and representatives from the Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce and representatives from Lehigh Community Services will talk about how to get a message to the president about the problems in Lehigh. They hoped to come up with a Lehigh Acres Stimulus Plan to show Obama where money is needed to improve Lehigh and put people to work.
The meeting was called after many in the community were talking to each other on the phone about the planned visit, he said.
Lee County Commissioner Frank Mann is expected to attend the meeting. He said over the weekend that he had not been contacted about meeting with Obama even though he represents Lehigh Acres on the Commission.
“We just want to get together and talk about plans to try to get our message to President Obama,” Shelor said. A group of about 50 people may attend the meeting.
“We may come up with a resolution or some other things to try to get to the President,” Shelor said.
“We want to tell him about the need for jobs here, the people who have lost their homes. We would like for him to talk to people who have gone through or are facing foreclosure. He needs to hear this from the people of Lehigh,” Shelor said.
The group will hold a press conference Monday afternoon to announce plans they may come up with regarding the Stimulus Plan for Lehigh.
