Unitarian Church to ordain new minister

Allison Farnum, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers, will become The Rev. Allison Farnum during a day of celebration at the church Sunday, Feb. 15.

Several people from Lehigh Acres are members of the church.

The congregation will ordain her as a Unitarian Universalist minister and ceremonially install her as its settled minister at a 3 p.m. service.In the Unitarian Universalist (UU) tradition, the authority to ordain ministers rests with local congregations.

“I am honored to receive the title of ‘Reverend’ from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers so that I might honor the privilege of ministry and use the title to bring a liberal religious voice to our community,” Farnum said.

Unitarian Universalist ministers from Baltimore and Chicago and faculty members of Meadville Lombard Theological School will participate in the Feb. 15 service.Included is the Rev. James Hobart, son of the late Rev. Dr. Albert Hobart, the church’s first minister.

The congregation voted to call Farnum to be its settled minister last April.She earned her master of divinity degree from Meadville Lombard Theological School in June and officially assumed her duties in September.

She served as an intern minister at the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore in 2005-2006 and as summer minister at the Unitarian Church of Evanston, Ill., in 2007.

The ordination and installation service will be followed by a soup and salad feast. All are welcome.

Farnum and her husband, Andy Crossen, a computer software researcher and developer, live in Fort Myers.
