The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools and Temple Beth Shalom in Cape Coral are hosting a special magic show next month at Ida S. Baker High.
Magician Garry Carson and performer Kelsey Kara, from the national touring company Carson Entertainment, will perform at the high school on March 18 starting at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the show will benefit both organizations.
Steve Hershfield, president of Temple Beth Shalom, said the show is based in Las Vegas and is family oriented. It features magic and exotic animals such as tigers and panthers, he said.
“It’s rated the number one family entertainment for two years running,” said Hershfield.
Marshall T. Bower, executive director of the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, said funds raised will support programs for teachers.
“Where there is the greatest need is where the money will go,” said Bower. “Right now we just planned on generally using it for all of our programs.”
The foundation has worked with Temple Beth Shalom in the past to secure needs for Title I schools but Bower said this is the first fund-raising venture the organization is holding with a religious organization.
For the past five years, Temple Beth Shalom has collected school supplies for underprivileged children through its social action committee, explained Hershfield, but they contacted the foundation to help raise more funds for teachers.
The husband and wife Carson and Kara illusionist team have performed in over 40 countries and have appeared on shows such as “Good Morning America” and “Inside Edition.” The two have also been contacted to perform for the president of the United States.
Carson has performed over 8,000 shows at the MGM in Las Vegas and Kara, a former Miss Nevada, appeared on The Mickey Mouse Club and toured with the Legends in Concert world tour.
Also while performing, Carson created an educational program, “Knowing The Magic Words.”
The show will feature an intermission and snack items will be available for purchase. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children 17 and under and Hershfield said teachers in the school district receive a special rate of $12.
