Cityhood would have helped Lehigh
To the Editor,
In regards to the negative articles in the national media about our town, Lehigh Acres, I feel that with all the crime, foreclosures, property neglect, and lack of employment, our future looks bleak.
Please do not despair as my husband and I moved here 30 years ago and it was once a wonderful, friendly, and caring community.
I hope and pray that it will be that way once again.
It seems that 10 years ago, we all knew and heard positive reports about our town. Then things changed and our population increased.
For many years, our good citizens, led by Bo Turbeville and others, worked for us to become a city, under which we could control our own destiny.
Just before the vote was to be taken, others placed negative signs about, so cityhood was voted down.
This dispelled all possibility of again presenting the ballot to vote for cityhood for many years to come.
Instead of concerned folks moving away, unless for jobs, we need to stay and help turn the negative image of our town to a positive one.
