Several students are being honored Thursday, Feb. 19 by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in its monthly Do The Right Thing program.

The ceremony is being held at 2 p.m. in the Board Room of the School Board of Lee County, Lee County Public Education Center, 2855 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. This is a new location for the awards ceremony, said John McGraw, the coordinator of the Do The Right Thing program.

This month’s winning students come from Fort Myers, North Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, Fort Myers Beach, Bonita Springs, Cape Coral and Alva.

Each month throughout the 2008-2009 school year, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office honors the positive actions of Lee County students through the student recognition program.

The following students are being honored:

Timothy Barkhuasen of Fort Myers is a pre-school student at Daniels Academy. He is being honored for being a considerate and unselfish pre-schooler. He used his birthday gift card to purchase toys for the children at the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Cody Prevatt and Courtney Prevatt are from Alva. Cody Prevatt is in the eighty grade, while his sister, Courtney, is in sixth grade at Alva Middle School.

The brother and sister collected money for a family that needed gasoline money to travel to a Tampa hospital to be with their child who had been hit by a vehicle. They placed donation jars at local businesses to get donations from the community.

Patience Parker of Lehigh Acres, a sixth grade student at Alva Middle School. She is being honored because she donated her hair to the Locks of Love program, an organization that provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children in the U.S. suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Both are being honored because of their awareness of a safety concern at their school and brought it to the attention of their teacher.

She is being honored after she and her mother while riding in their car saw a man sitting in a car and it appeared to Nicole that something was wrong. Her mother checked on the man and discovered that he was in a medical emergency. Nicole called 911 to get help.

Kelsey Collins of Fort Myers Beach is a fifth grade student at Fort Myers Beach Elementary School. She is being honored for her self confidence and willingness to be a friend, leader and mentor to her peers. When given a task, she sticks with it until she masters a skill, while in the meantime her attitude remains positive.

Devin Albritton of North Fort Myers, is a second grade student at Bayshore Elementary School. He is being honored because of his overall caring and concern for his family. A few months ago, Devin’s grandfather went to a local hospital for a CAT scan. He had been sick and they were doing a follow-up check on him. There were complications that occurred and his grandfather passed away during the procedure. Devin was able to help his family through the death. At home, he is credited for taking on several family responsibilities.
