The AARP Foundation again this year is providing free tax preparation in an outreach program for seniors and low to middle income residents at the East County Regional Library off of Lee Blvd. at 831Gunnery Road North.
A group ofseniors has volunteered to assist taxpayers in preparing their returns and filling them via computer with refunds deposited directly to a bank account. Bring a blank check so they can record the correct bank codes. You can also receive a refund check via the mail.
All of the seniors have been tested and are IRS certified tax preparers.
To use this service you do not need to be an AARP member or even a senior. It will be provided on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The last day will be Thursday, April 9, 2009.
It is by appointment only. You will need to come to the library and sign up. The library cannot make appointments by telephone. Walk-ins may result in a wait of several hours for a cancellation or no show.
When you come for your scheduled time you will need to bring with you the tax return from last year, Social Security card, all W-2 forms from employment if you worked in 2008, pension and social security 1099 forms, and any interest or dividend statements. This service program is limited to non-complex basic 1040 returns.
If any of the following apply to your tax situation you will need to use a professional tax service: rental or royalty income; self-employment resulting in a loss or income and expenses over $5,000; non-cash contribution over $500; schedule K-1; a sale of business property; casualty, theft or hurricane loss; farm income; moving expenses; or more than six stock sales.
A new deduction is available to taxpayers this year who do not itemize. An individual can claim up to $500 and a married couple up to $1,000 for property taxes resulting in an increased standard deduction. Bring with you your 2008 Lee County property tax statement in order that they can enter the correct amount.
A joint return requires the signatures of both spouses.
Ed Maggi, site manager, and his courteous volunteers are here to make the tax season less stressful. With computer preparation and direct deposit you can get your refund in less than 20 days.
