Kenneth Eugene Varnum

Kenneth Eugene Varnum, 75, of Lehigh Acres, was born August 1, 1932 in Dothan, Alabama. He had lived in Lehigh Acres since July of 1973. He is remembered by many in the neighborhood as Kenny, the mailman, as he delivered to his own residential route for 18 and a half years.

He graduated high school in Colquitt, Ga., at the age of 16. He joined the Air Force and lived in England, Germany and Turkey. As a member of the elite Air Force Security Service, he did translations of Russian documents, books, letters etc. for more than 20 years. He retired to Florida after 22.5 years in the Air Force. At first, he worked at Climate Control Air Conditioning, for several years. He joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1975 as a postal carrier.

He received many awards during his service, in both the Air Force and the USPS, among these are the Good Conduct Medal, Good Neighbor, Leadership, and Teaching awards. Always a good bowler; he was a member of the SW Florida Regional Bowling Association for 27 years, twice President of the local board and was also the Florida State President.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Lois Varnum; brothers Buford, Blonney and Leonard and his sister Christine Miller.

He is survived by his brothers Hubert Varnum of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Carroll Varnum of Edison, Ga., and several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce Rook Varnum; daughter, Michele (Jim) Keane of Apopka, Fla., and daughter, Denise (John) Donholt, granddaughter Chelsey and grandson Jordan of Lehigh Acres.

Visitation will be Friday, February 20, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 to noon at Anderson Funeral Home, Lehigh Acres, 2701 Lee Blvd., (239) 368-7080. A memorial service will start at noon.
