Penny Drive to hammer financial crisis home to state lawmakers
To show lawmakers that every penny counts, especially in the realm of public education, the Teachers Association of Lee County and the Support Personnel Association of Lee County is asking community members to donate a “penny for public education.” The goal is to raise 78,000 pennies – one to represent each of the K-12 students currently enrolled in Lee County Public Schools. That’s about 440 pounds of pennies.
Leaders from TALC, SPALC, the school board, the superintendent of schools and other officials will meet at the Lee County Public Education Center on Monday, March 16, to gather all the donated pennies and ready them for the trip to Tallahassee, where they will join pennies from Florida’s other 66 school districts and be placed on the steps of the State Capitol Building. The final destination for the donated pennies will be the Children’s Home Society of Florida.
