Robert F. Maguire
Robert F. Maguire, 87, of Lehigh Acres, formerly of Weymouth and Somerville, Mass., died on Monday February 23, 2009.
Born in Vallejo, Calif., he was the son of the late Robert F. Maguire Sr. and Henrietta Maguire Crimmen. He moved to Somerville, Mass., at an early age and had lived in Weymouth for 26 years before moving to Lehigh Acres in 1984.
He was a graduate of Somerville High School and Wentworth Institute of Technology in Massachusetts and had attended both Northeastern University and MIT. He entered service in 1943 as a 2nd class electrician mate in the U.S. Navy, 140th Naval Construction Battalion and was discharged in 1946 as a 1st class electrician mate.
He was a member of the IBEW Local #103 in Boston for more than 68 years and retired from the MBTA in 1974 as chief inspector-Instructor of signals and communications. He then worked for the consulting and engineering firms of: Parson and Brinckerhoft in Atlanta, Kaiser Engineers in Miami, and Houston, Texas and Transportation and Distribution in Philadelphia, Pa., as senior project engineer for Train Control and Communication. He had also worked as project superintendent for Union Switch and Signal in Philadelphia.
He was a member of the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Past Faithful Navigator of Bishop Cheverus Assembly Boston, F.S. Msgr Biter Assembly Lehigh Acres, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post, Fleet Reserve and was past commander of Island X-8 Navy SeaBees of America in FL.
He was the husband of the late Barbara Mae (Edlund) Maguire. father and grandfather of Barbara M. Nestor of Quincy, Michael R. Maguire married to Sheila of Plymouth and their children Robert, Laura and Mark and Dorothy A. Maguire of Exeter, N.H., and her children Jessica, Sarah, Catherine, Martha and Rebecca. Great-grandfather of Madison, Celia and Grace. Also surviving is a brother, Joseph T. Maguire of Waltham, Marie Leahy of Florida and the late Marjorie Ann Wilmerding. Also survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. and a dear friend, Jean Antleitner of Lehigh Acres.
Funeral services wree held March 2, 2009 at the McDonald Funeral Home, South Weymouth, Mass., with burial at the Veteran National Cemetery, Bourne.
