Lehigh teacher wins Golden Apple
Tilisa Skerczak, a teacher of advanced kindergarten students at Sunshine Elementary School, was one of the teachers this morning who received a Golden Apple award.
A cadre of Golden Apple Foundation members, reporters and photographers surprised her at around 9:30 a.m. when they marched down the hall and burst into her classroom.
“Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh,” she shrieked.
The children all cheered.
Skerczak will be one of a handful of teachers who will be honored at the Harborside Event Center in April.
She said she was inspired by her late father who was a teacher in Indianana.
“He always told me I would make a great teacher some day,” she said as tears appeared in her eyes.
Teachers and students alike praised her for her teaching abilities.
Her husband waa on hand to give her a kiss after the award. The Golden Apple was passed around the class of children who all wanted to touch it
Her husband said he was called yesterday and asked to come to school and talk to the principal. He said he knew then that she was one of the winners, but he didn’t tell her anything. The only people at the school who knew of the surprise visit were the principal and the assistant principal.
