Learn how to stretch food at Lehigh function on March 21

By Staff | Mar 18, 2009

With the economy still in the doldrums and with many people in Lehigh Acres and the rest of Lee County losing their jobs, and with food banks reporting they have less food to hand out, one local church is stepping up to the bat and hope to help people stretch their dollars and their food in a nutritional way and survive these hard times.

Maude Coleman, a home economist, who lives half of the year in Lehigh and the other half up north, will presented a seminar on Saturday, March 21 at the

First community Congregational Church of Christ at 200 Leeland Heights Blvd.

It was the first church built in Lehigh and its congregation has continued to be active in the community with plenty of programs to help people.

It also maintains a food bank but a spokeswoman there this week said food is not as plentiful as it was. She said the Harry Chapin Food Bank is not getting the contributions it has in the past and cannot supply as much food to the many food banks in the county. However, members of the church and others in the community bring food to the church to be given away to those who need food.

The seminar costs a dollar or you can bring a can of food to be used in the church’s food bank.

The special seminar to teach people how to stretch food and how to stretch their dollars will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m.

Coleman said the seminar is open to people of all ages, both men and women, and she promises that if you attend, you will go away with a lot of valuable

information and learn to make food last longer and also be nutritious.

Coleman said she has observed the way many people eat and they are not getting the proper nutrition that they need. She said quick foods won’t solve the problem and cost more than preparing your food at home with a lot of tips she has to offer.

“This seminar is not open just to people who need food, but it is open to anyone who wants to learn how to use the food the family has and make it

stretch with more interesting meals that are as nutritious or even more nutritious than what they may be eating,” Coleman said. For more information about the all-day affair, call the church at 369-1615.
