Students honored for ‘doing the right thing’

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office honors 18 students in schools from in Lee County this week in its Do The Right Thing program. The ceremony is Thursday, March 19 in the board room of the School Board of Lee County at the Public Education Center on Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

This month’s 18 students come from Fort Myers, North Fort Myers and Lehigh Acres.

The goal of “Do the Right Thing” is to reinforce positive behavior among youths and to establish students as role models for their peers, said John McGraw, the Sheriff’s Office coordinator of the program.

The following were to be honored:

Justin Miller of North Fort Myers is a 6th grade student at Oak Hammock Middle School and was honored when he found a $100 bill on the floor of the school lunch room and took it to the principal’s office.

Kristen Heath of Fort Myers is in the 12th grade at Cypress Lake High School. When Kristen heard about a missing eight-year-old boy in Collier County, she convinced her mother that they come forward and help in the search. They drove to Immokalee, and participated in the search efforts.

Jordan Albright and Lauren Davis live in Myers, and are in the 11th grade at Cypress Lake High School.

Jordan and Lauren organized a fundraiser to help build a well for a poor family in Haiti. They had set a goal of $100 to help purchase the building materials for the well. They ended up collecting $150.

Kyle Robertson of Fort Myers is in the 12th grade at Cypress Lake High School. Kyle was in downtown Fort Myers, with friends and saw a woman walking toward her car and fell, got up and fell again. Kyle went over to her and asked her if she was all right and helped her up. He said it appeared that she was intoxicated. He took her keys, helped her into her car so she had a place to sit and asked his friends to call the police.

Nathan Burton of Fort Myers, is a second grade Student at Bayshore Elementary School. The week before Christmas break, Nathan came to his teacher with a present that he had gotten for the teacher’s neighbor. The teacher had told the class of the elderly gentleman.

Ciara Harney of North Fort Myers is a third grade Student at Bayshore Elementary School. Ciara was given a 100 percent score on a test that she took and discovered that the teacher had made a mistake in grading her. The mistake when corrected caused the student to get a lower grade.

Conner Albritton and Kieleigh Cook live in North Fort Myers. Both are first grade students at Bayshore Elementary School. Conner and Kieleigh were willing to help a student who had broken her arm

without being asked.

Emmanuel Blanc of Lehigh Acres is a 8th grade student at Veterans Park Academy. Emmanuel’s house had burned down over the past Thanksgiving break and he went inside the burning home to save his grandmother form the fire.

Christina Gedra and her sister, Jessica Gedra, live in Fort Myers. Christina is in 7th grade and Jessica is in 3rd grade, with both children attending Noonan Academy.

Both Christina and her sister Jessica have been involved in many ways in their school, church and community. Christina leads the Student Council in social activities and fundraisers to improve the school. Jessica shows compassion and fair play to others on a daily basis. Christina and Jessica have participated in community efforts to collect bags full of toys and clothes for needy children.

Amber Kofsky, Parker Ricks and Austin Shute all live in Fort Myers, and all are kindergarten students at Treeline Elementary School. The students found a $100 dollar bill on school property and reported their find to their teacher.

De’Shawnte Smith of Fort Myers, is a 11th grade student. Ashlee Fason of Lehigh Acres, is a 11th grade student. Ryashia Stroman of Fort Myers, is a 12th grade student. All three students attend Lehigh Senior High School.De’Shawnte, Ashlee and Ryashia all gave of their time to help volunteer at the Fort Myers Soup Kitchen. They helped prepare food for the Meals On Wheels Program. They also helped prepare and serve meals to men, women and children at the Fort Myers Soup Kitchen.
