A sobriety checkpoint was conducted in Lee County over the weekend near Fort Myers Beach. The following are the results of the activity:
– DUI Arrests: 15
– Arrests on other charges: 4
– Citations issued: 25
Number of vehicles through checkpoint: 877
Officials said the primary emphasis for checkpoints is to:
1. Remove impaired drivers from the roadway
2. Reduce the likelihood impaired drivers will operate their vehicles on our roadways
3. Heighten public awareness
4. Educate the public on the dangers of drunk driving.
Officials say similar programs in other states have resulted in dramatic improvements. This selective enforcement effort is bolstered by the routine vigilance of deputies, troopers and officers on routine patrol every day.
This weekend’s checkpoint involved members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Myers Police Department, Florida Department of Transportation, Cape Coral Police Department, and Florida Gulf Coast University Police Department. The checkpoints were also a part of the Sheriff’s Office commitment to the national education, awareness and enforcement campaign known as “You Drink & Drive, You Lose.”
