Prep Report: Baker slugs Cape 9-0 in softball

By Staff | Mar 27, 2009

Three players have been through it all – seniors Caitlin Holloway, Kayla Vetter and Christie Larrimore – providing stability and outstanding play.

It continued Thursday night in the Bulldogs’ 9-0 victory at Cape Coral. Holloway went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Vetter belted a solo home run in the sixth and Larrimore made her biggest impact defensively, starting a key double play to get the Bulldogs out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first.

The Bulldogs (11-7) have five seniors total this season, including Jamie Ross and Lacey Sovern. Ross, who has signed to play at Francis Marion University, has been with the Bulldogs for two years after playing at Mariner. Sovern is in her first season, serving in a utility role.

“They’re the leaders of our team,” Baker coach Morgan Klare said. “Even if they’re not in the game they’re making the girls laugh on the bench. They take pride in our team and often step up with the key base hit to get us going.”

Holloway has supplied many of those hits. After driving in 43 runs and earning second-team all-state honors last year, she continues to be a huge run producer.

In a 7-4 win at Barron Collier Tuesday, Holloway jumpstarted the Bulldogs with a three-run double and others followed with clutch hits. The offensive production continued Thursday.

Junior Allie Hare went 3-for-3 with a double, while other key hits included Katie Rieser’s two-run double, Hannah Kelly’s two-run single, and Sami Fisher’s two-run double that scored Sovern and Laney Leonetti.

“Any girl on our team can hit the ball over the fence,” said Holloway, a centerfielder. “That’s not necessarily what we’re looking for but power is underestimated on our team. We’ve picked it up with our defense over the past few weeks, but we’re definitely an offensive team.”

The Seahawks (6-10) fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first and squandered a huge opportunity with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first.

Freshman Payton DiLallo reached on an error, in between walks issued to freshmen Amanda Kopale and Amanda Hurley. With no outs and the bases loaded, Tara Higgins grounded to the second baseman Larrimore, who fired home for one out and the catcher Hare went to first for the second out.

Rieser kept the Seahawks in check, for the most part, after that, allowing three hits in seven innings. DiLallo had a single and double and Higgins added a single.

The Seahawks had played well entering Thursday’s game, picking up a win Monday against Bishop Verot and another Tuesday against East Lee County. They failed to cash in on their opportunities against Baker.

“That’s definitely frustrating,” Seahawks coach Amy Petruska said. “We have to be able to string hits together.”

The Seahawks are making progress, though, after struggling in recent years. Petruska feels the team is becoming stronger defensively.

Kopale continued to flash her skills in center field, making a pair of leaping catches and throwing out a runner at third base.

The Seahawks are back in action Monday when they travel to Cypress Lake. The Bulldogs host Fort Myers Tuesday.
