Commission accepts Lehigh Community Plan
The Lee County Commission approved and accepted the Lehigh Acres Community Plan at its meeting on March 24.
It came up on the agenda at around 11:34 a.m. The vote was unanimous with at least two of the commissioners expressing support. Both Commissioners Frank Mann and Tammy Hall said it was a positive plan and it was time to move forward with Lehigh Acres.
Attending the meeting on behalf of Lehigh were Damon Shelor, Bo Turbeville, Jere Carrick, Frank LaRossa, Edd Weiner, Richard Georgian and David King, all community leaders.
LaRossa, who is a member of the Lehigh Acres Planning Corp., said it was “a good plan,” but that he had not supported it when it became before the LACPC for approval. The vote was 13 to 1.
LaRossa said he was against it because he believes that the people of Lehigh should have had a right to vote on the plan before it went to the county commission.
The Lehigh Acres Community Plan study began a few years ago and was prepared by Wallace, Roberts & Todd whose home offices are on the east coast near West Palm Beach. The study cost the county $500,000.
Several seminars and workshops were held with the residents of the community to gather information for inclusion in the plan.
When it came up for final approval at the Lehigh Acres Community Planning Corp., members said they wanted to get the county to start implementing some parts of the plan as soon as possible, once it was accepted by the county.
The plan generally calls for the creation of nodes or neighborhoods with recreational and commercial facilities. It calls for better roads and beautification of Lehigh.
It also calls for sidewalks and better lighting in the community in addition to other things.
Commission members said it now allowed them to do some things for Lehigh in a way according to a plan since the community is not incorporated.
