‘Tip a Cop’ benefit begins Sunday in Fort Myers

By Staff | Apr 3, 2009

The public is invited to join members of Southwest Florida Law Enforcement for this year’s “Tip A Cop” benefit, beginning Sunday in Fort Myers. The annual fund-raiser benefits local Special Olympians.

Members of law enforcement and area citizens will be on hand to serve as celebrity greeters and waiters for the event, being held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, April 5, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday April 6 at Joe’s Crab Shack, located at 2024 W. First Street, Fort Myers.

During the event, T-shirts will be on sale for $12, and hats will be on sale for $10.

Nearly $10,000 was generated for the Special Olympics during last year’s event, officials said.

Also benefiting Special Olympians is the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, scheduled for Friday, May. The Torch Run is an intra-state relay race involving more than 300 city, county, state, and federal agencies. The event kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Headquarters of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, located at 14750 Six Mile Cypress Parkway, Fort Myers. The finish line will be at the Big Lots parking lot, located at the intersection of US 41 and Pondella Road, North Fort Myers.

Participation is restricted to law enforcement and first responder agencies.
